A Luxury Two-Week Australia Itinerary: Sydney, Brisbane & Melbourne
Last July, my husband and I celebrated our anniversary with a two-week trip to Australia, and it quickly became one of our favorite trips we’ve ever taken. While the journey from the U.S. is long, Australia rewards travelers with incredible cities, beautiful scenery, and unforgettable experiences. We split our time between Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne, which gave us a great mix of iconic sights, laid-back coastal energy, and vibrant city culture.
If you’re planning your own trip to Australia, here’s a look at how we structured our itinerary, and a couple of standout spots that made the experience even more special.
Sydney: Australia’s Iconic Harbor City
Sydney is the perfect introduction to Australia. The harbor is even more beautiful in person, and so many of the city’s most famous sights are concentrated in one area.
We spent our days wandering around Circular Quay and The Rocks, taking in views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and hopping on ferries to see the city from the water. One of our favorite spots to explore off the ferry was Watsons Bay. It’s a quieter residential area with walking paths leading to stunning coastal views. We can confirm that people who rave about doing the Sydney Bridge Climb are not exaggerating. It was a spectacular experience.
For our stay, we chose the Four Seasons Sydney. It was an excellent base for exploring the city. The location near Circular Quay made it incredibly easy to walk to many of Sydney’s top attractions, and the harbor views from the hotel are spectacular. Waking up to a view of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge felt we were in a movie. The service and comfort also made it a wonderful place to relax after long days of sightseeing and to quickly acclimate to the time change.
Brisbane: A Relaxed Riverfront Stop
Our next stop was Brisbane, which offered a slightly slower pace compared to Sydney. The city has a warm, relaxed feel and plenty of outdoor spaces to enjoy.
We spent time exploring the South Bank area and walking along the riverfront. One of the highlights was taking the train to visit the Australia Zoo. We lucked out and managed to see the whole Irwin family show off the zoo’s famous crocodiles. Brisbane is also a great jumping-off point for exploring more of Queensland if you want to extend your trip. We took a day to head to Cairns for a snorkeling excursion at the Great Barrier Reef – talk about a bucket list experience!
We stayed at The Westin Brisbane, which was comfortable and well located for exploring the city center.
Melbourne: Food, Culture, and Skyline Views
Our final stop was Melbourne, which has a completely different personality from Sydney. Known for its creative energy and incredible food scene, Melbourne quickly won us over. We had a wonderful dinner at Longrain – do not skip the spicy mussels!
We loved wandering through the city’s laneways filled with cafés, street art, and small boutiques. The coffee culture here is also serious. If you like a matcha, Raya is a great place to stop in for a treat.
To finish the trip, we stayed at the Ritz-Carlton Melbourne. It was truly a memorable place to end our anniversary adventure. As one of the city’s newest luxury hotels, it offers stunning skyline views and an elegant atmosphere that makes your stay feel special from the moment you arrive. The chili crab scramble at breakfast was a favorite. It was the perfect place to unwind after exploring Melbourne’s vibrant neighborhoods.
Planning Your Own Australia Trip
Australia exceeded our expectations in every way. Two weeks felt like a great introduction to the country, giving us time to experience several cities while still enjoying a relaxed pace. We will certainly be back!
If Australia is on your travel wish list, we’d love to help you plan the perfect itinerary. It’s the perfect spot for a milestone trip, anniversary, or adventure.
